Helllllllo Writers!
Dominique here with your monthly Women Who Write newsletter. We’ve got a jam packed November, full of opportunities for you to come and write with us before the year is out.
We were also incredibly busy throughout October. Kadie ran a fantastic event called Murder, She Crowed (see photos at the end) where we gathered together to write our own murder mystery podcast episode, we went along to the Flare Festival and had our own stall, and of course we ran all of our regular events!
Today (1 November) our inaugural writing challenge starts and runs until 21 December. I’ve set my own writing goal for the challenge (to finish the first draft of my novel!!), and I think it can be done!
Will you be joining us at one of our events in November?
Are unsure about how you can get invovled?
Are you a bit apprehensive about coming alone or for the first time?
We’d be happy to chat to you about any questions you have, we want to help you feel safe and supported in coming along so do get in touch. You can message us on instagram or via email at womenwhowriteedinburgh@gmail.com
What’s happening in November?
🍂 Fall into Winter ❄️Writing Challenge
Our Fall into Winter challenge starts today! It runs from 1 November to 21 December. It’s a 50-day challenge to meet a goal of your choosing, whether thats finish 10 poems, write a book review, hit 100,000 words, finish a single short story - whatever your goal is there’s room for you. We’ll come together periodically to cheer each other on at cafe meet-ups or virtually. We’ll be making the most of Edinburgh’s dark, cosy autumnal evenings.
You can read much more about the challenge in our October newsletter and if it sounds good to you then we can add you to our whatsapp group, get in touch with us via comments, instagram, or email (womenwhowriteedinburgh@gmail.com) for the link.
Monday evening writing sessions
We meet every other Monday evening in the gorgeous library. This is an informal evening where we focus on our writing whilst chatting with our fellow writers. We provide creative writing prompts for those feeling creatively challenged; however, feel free to bring your own work! You can arrive from 18:30 and runs until around 21:00.
November dates are 11 and 25
There won’t be any ticketing for these dates, you’ll just be able to let us know you’re attending through our whatsapp group (Get in touch if you’d like to be added)
Rise and Write - 22 November
This month, we’ll be meeting at 7 am at a coffee shop in the New Town. Keep an eye out on eventbrite, Instagram or our WhatsApp group for a ticket drop!
Critique Session - Date TBC
If you’re keen to have a fresh perspective on your writing, this is your opportunity. Our critique session is a friendly, safe way to get valuable and constructive feedback.
Late Night Write
This month we’ll be meeting from 8pm at a city centre cosy cocktail bar. We’ll be sharing the venue closer to the time. Keep an eye out on eventbrite, Instagram or our WhatsApp group for a ticket drop!
By the beach writing retreat (sold out)
A day of guided writing alongside your fellow women and NB writers! We sprint throughout the day, socialise in the breaks, and take an afternoon walk on the beach to recharge our brains. Our retreat sold out in less than 18 hours so I think that’s telling us we should then run more frequently or in other venues?!
Looking back at October
Murder, She Crowed, Late Night Write, Monday nights, Flare Festival, and Rise and Write - oh it was a busy but brilliant month.
Keep the words flowing, writers, but be kind to yourself if they don’t,
Dominique, Abbie, Kadie, Lauren
Our mission is to give women and NB writers the time, space and support they need to write.
We interpret the word 'writer' broadly. You might write fiction or non-fiction, novels or short stories, scripts or poems, blogs or newsletters, theses, love letters, journal entries or restaurant reviews. It doesn't matter. If you write, you're welcome to join us.
We host free and paid events, including biweekly writing sprints, day retreats by the beach, early morning writing sessions with coffee and late-night writing with cocktails, critique sessions and literary-themed trips in and around Scotland.
We also recognise that other writers face significant hurdles to writing in community, including older persons, persons with disabilities, parents and guardians, those from ethnic minorities and those who identify as LGBTI+. Inclusion lies at the heart of what we do: our goal is to create safe and accessible events for writers. We are committed to fostering our diverse membership, and we welcome all feedback to ensure we meet the needs of anyone looking to be a part of our community. Please email us at womenwhowriteedinburgh@gmail.com if you have any comments or concerns.
